Our noses play hosts to an entire community of microbes! But, have you ever wondered about what might be living there? As part of the CARRIAGE study, we’re working to understand what different bacteria are using our noses as homes, and how that affects us.
The CARRIAGE study has recruited over 20,000 volunteers who have swabbed their noses in the name of science! Using those swabs, researchers are beginning to identify the different bacterial species that are resident in our noses, and how they impact each other. With a particular focus on Staphylococcus aureus, this study aims to understand the different factors which influence the persistent nasal carriage of this bacteria, and why for some people it can cause severe infections.
Activity:
We’re planning on running a 3-stage lab process.
1. Swab a fake nose with a swab to get your sample
2. Process your sample in the ‘lab’
3. Match up what your swab results look like with a key, stamp your lab report!
