Leaders and followers engage in a constant dialogue – moulding opinions, actions, and mindsets. Leadership does not happen in isolation, it is a vibrant exchange where power and influence is shaped and formed. In this event we will examine this essential interplay, delving into how power lies in the space between leaders and followers, and how those who lead can create greater impact through engaging substantively with this dialogue. Looking ahead, can we build a new perspective on leadership which creates greater productive impact in the 21st Century?

In the dynamic world of leadership, the interplay between leaders and followers weaves the foundations of positive and productive behaviours. The key to impactful leadership lies in this reciprocal relationship, where leaders and followers shape each other’s paths.

The impact and success of the leader depends on the relationship and exchange between those who are in positions of leadership and those who are choosing to follow the path leaders create. Fundamental to this is the understanding of the mindsets and perspectives that each holds of the other. Leaders craft actions inspired by the voices around them, while followers mould responses based on the worldview presented.
This virtuous circle has become increasingly complex with the rise of technology, meta-communities and an increasingly fractured social discourse. In this event, we will explore how leaders have successfully and unsuccessfully engaged with this dialogue, and how followers have taken action to move the conversation forward to more impactful ends.

Our panel of expert speakers will share their perspectives on how modern political discourse has been shaped by the swinging pendulum of leadership and followership, how those beyond structural authority have challenged leadership assumptions and choices, and how great leadership occurs when a dialogue of equals occurs.
This event is held by the Møller Institute in collaboration with The Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, which holds a rich collection of insights that we will draw on during this event and use to understand our framing of the future. We will bring perspectives from those who lead, those who align alongside or against them in their followership, and those who have worked to create understanding of the exchange between them.
